We Are Children of God

A training for kids in Haiti reminds Samaritan’s Purse staff members of Matthew 18:2.

We traveled through a difficult and narrow road to go a village called Petiparadi. Samaritan’s Purse was starting a Dignity and Education for Children Program training with teachers and students in a Christian church. When we got there, many of the kids were waiting for us and approached me with big smiles. I was delighted to see the excitement in their faces.

“How do you see yourself?” This was the question that Samaritan’s Purse asked the teachers and students. Casamajor, a Samaritan’s Purse staff member, started to draw himself on the board and asked the students to do the same. I noticed that the kids didn’t hesitate to draw themselves. It was delightful to see their enthusiasm.

Casamajor shared with them about personal value and how God loves us and that we were created to His own image. It’s not about money or the place we live; it’s about God’s love for us. Casamajor then shared John 1:12 with them.

“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name” (NKJV).

I could see the excitement in their faces. The kids learned that they were children of God and that God has a purpose for their lives. Many were paying close attention. After the lesson, Samaritan’s Purse staff members sang with the students and talked to some of them. It was amazing to see the joy that every one of them bring to the children.

This lesson reminded me of Matthew 18:2-3: “Then Jesus called a little child to Him, set him in the midst of them, and said, “Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven” (NKJV). Personal value is important in our daily lives, and God has to be a part of it.

The children’s smiles reminded me that we are loved by God and we are His children. I learned that day to challenge myself to be more like a kid. I love the fact that I have a loving Father who cares for me.

The Dignity and Education for Children Program inspires positive behavior change among children through Gospel-centered training. The program involves partnering with schools and churches to train teachers and students about the Gospel. The Gospel is shared with teachers and students through Bible trainings and at sports events.
