Darren Mullenix, director of Team Samaritan’s Purse, blogs about training for the Georgia Half-Marathon.
On March 18, Team Samaritan’s Purse will be participating in the Publix Georgia Marathon and Half-Marathon in Atlanta. I will be running the half-marathon for the second time, and this year my wife Sita and oldest daughter Katelyn will be joining me. Our youngest daughter, Jessica, is also coming along to be the family cheerleader.
As a family, we have a history of participating in sports. Jessica (14) is a bit of an equestrian and cycles. Katelyn (17) has played competitive soccer for almost as many years as she can remember, and Sita played college basketball and volleyball (though we won’t talk about how many years ago that might have been). I played college soccer and have been participating with Team SP in running and triathlon events since we started the fundraising program.
Katelyn decided that she wanted to do a half-marathon before graduating high school, since she has never run a race longer than a 5K. Sita has never participated in any kind of running event. Team SP presented her with the opportunity to challenge herself with something way bigger than she ever thought possible. This year’s event is right before Sita’s birthday, so it just seemed a great time to do it.
For us it has been a great time of supporting each other through the challenges of training. As part of Team SP, I’ve done this half-marathon before and also a few triathlons. So for me the training process isn’t new. But it is nice to have my family join me this time. The fact that together we have the chance to impact the lives of people in South Sudan by raising money to drill wells makes it that much more meaningful.
We’re not special. We’re simply responding to the call that Christ laid forth at the end of the parable of the Good Samaritan in Luke 10: “Go and do likewise”. If Christ can use us in this way, we know he can use others as well.
