Lessons Learned in the Philippines

Favorite moments and important lessons from an internship abroad

Julia Naman was an intern with Samaritan’s Purse in the Philippines.

After four wonderful months serving as an intern with Samaritan’s Purse in the Philippines, I’ve now finished my internship. I’ll miss the team and this amazing country dearly, and I cannot wait to come back to visit as soon as possible. To honor my time here, I want to share three highlights from my time in the Philippines.

  1. Dancing with the hygiene team

I loved joining all the hygiene team’s events because they almost always incorporate dancing. My favorite dance from the hygiene team is the handwashing dance, which teaches proper handwashing techniques through song and dance. From eliminating open defecation to promoting hygiene, I’ve loved joining in the enthusiasm of the team.

  1. Friday morning Grand Devo

Every Friday, the Samaritan’s Purse team hosts a large devotional with all of the staff members. Unlike our regular devotionals, the Grand Devo is held outside with a view of the mountains and trees. While there, we praised God through songs and a message. It was a wonderful end to every week to join with hundreds of people worshipping God before His beautiful creation.

  1. Joining the water, sanitation, and hygiene team on a team building retreat

One of my favorite memories is the water, sanitation, and hygiene team building retreat. I was grateful for the time to relax and enjoy the many friendships I built during my internship.

Before arriving in the Philippines, I thought I had a good sense of my mission: serving and sharing the love of Christ with our beneficiaries. However, I didn’t realize how much I would receive from my fellow staff members. I’m grateful for the relationships I’ve built with my coworkers and have been encouraged by the work I have watched God do in our lives in just four short months.

The Samaritan’s Purse internship program is an opportunity for college students and recent graduates to use their skills to impact the world in a tangible way. Find out more here.
